Maths

At Wychbold First and Nursery, we believe that all children can develop a love of mathematics and become confident, capable mathematicians. We value the importance of challenge, encourage children to learn from their mistakes, and support them in acquiring a deep, secure and long-term understanding of mathematical concepts.

Our mathematics curriculum embodies a mastery maths approach, which is underpinned by a CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) approach. Children use a range of concrete resources to develop conceptual understanding before moving towards more abstract representations. Mathematical journaling is an integral part of our practice, enabling children to demonstrate their understanding, make connections between concepts and deepen their learning.

Teaching Toolkit strategies are embedded in mathematics lessons across the school to ensure inclusive, high-quality teaching for all learners. Our curriculum is underpinned by the key principles of fluency, reasoning and problem solving, equipping children with the skills and confidence they need to apply mathematics effectively in a range of contexts.
